Hack Your OPPO DV-970HD DVD Player to Upconvert Protected (Encrypted CSS) Content via Component Cables with the 613AMOD.iso Firmware
Update: Patch any firmware version to upconvert via component with Crometus' DV-970HD Firmware Modification Tool 1.2, aka 970FMT (requires Microsoft .NET 2.0).
Download, unzip and run it. Click How-To in the program for instructions. Forum topic here. As a bonus, this patch will also work on the DV-981HD, making it non-HDCP compliant.
Frequently Asked Questions [ skip to the instructions ]
- Q: What is this firmware and why would I want it?
- A: The OPPO DV-970HD DVD player does not upconvert protected content (any DVD with copy protection) over a component connection. It will upconvert through an HDMI connection, but it won't through a component connection. This hacked firmware allows copy-protected DVD content to be upconverted over a component connection.
- Q: What if I only play DVDs that I've downloaded from a bittorrent site or backed up myself with a program like DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter - would I still need this hacked firmware?
- A: You will only need this hacked firmware if you want to play regular store-bought DVDs over component. If the DVD does not have any copy protection on it (you downloaded it from a bittorrent site and burned it to a DVD, or you backed up your own DVD with a program that strips copy protection) then no - you will not need this hacked firmware. You only need this hacked firmware if what you are playing has copy protection on it and you want to upconvert it using a component connection.
- Q: Is this hacked firmware based on the latest firmware on OPPO's site?:
- A: No, it's based on Version: MVer: 05.00.01.07 Batch: 1A-0613 from June 13, 2006.
- Q: So if it's based on old firmware, what does that mean?
- A: Newer firmware (released after June 13, 2006) may have fixed an issue you may be having with your DVD player. If there's a fix for your problem in a later firmware release, then you need to decide which is more important to you: to be able to upconvert protected content over component, or fixing a problem with a newer firmware release. If the former, read on. If the latter, install the latest firmware from OPPO's site (but you won't be able to upconvert protected content).
- Q: You mean I can't apply the hacked firmware, then apply the new firmware on top of that and have the best of both worlds?
- A: No - once you flash the OPPO with any firmware, it erases the firmware that was already on it. Think of it as erasing your hard drive and reinstalling your operating system brand new on it each time you flash with new firmware. :)
- Q: Say I flash to this hacked firmware, but later I decide I don't want to use it anymore, or I want to install the latest firmware. What then?
- A: Just flash your OPPO with any other firmware and it will completely erase the current firmware loaded on the OPPO.
- Q: Is this hacked firmware supported by OPPO?
- A: No. OPPO acknowledges this as "third-party firmware" but does not offer tech support for it. In other words, don't call them and ask questions about the "hacked firmware you found on the Internet." :)
- Q: Are you the one that hacked this firmware?
- A: No, I'm just hosting it and the instructions.
Flash with this firmware at your own risk! I am not responsible if you render your DVD player inoperable by not following the directions.
- Buy the OPPO DV-970HD from Amazon.com or elsewhere.
- Download the firmware and unzip the file.
- Burn a CD from the ISO image file. Be sure to burn the CD as an ISO image file, not a data file.
- Turn on your TV display and the OPPO player.
- Open the player tray and insert the firmware CD, and then close the tray.
- As soon as the CD is loaded, you will see "Press Play To Start" on your TV display. Press the PLAY key on the remote or the player once.
- The TV display shows "File Copying" and then "UPGRADING"
- In about 8 seconds, the CD will be ejected. Remove the CD quickly; DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE. What follows is the process when the player will reboot itself.
- DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS NOR ATTEMPT TO CLOSE THE TRAY NOR UNPLUG THE POWER DURING THE REMAINING UPGRADE PROCESS.
- After approximately 1-2 minutes, the player reboots itself and closes the tray automatically to complete the process. The update process is completed when the front panel of the DVD player shows "No Disc".
- After updating the firmware, the TV display may lose synchronization with the player and show no picture. It is recommended that you turn off the DVD player, unplug it from the AC power, wait a few seconds and then plug back the AC power.
- Turn on the DVD player and adjust the settings if necessary.
- With the tray ejected, press the "OSD" button on the remote control to verify the firmware version.
Congratulations! You have just completed the firmware upgrade.
